5 things part 5

by blogmistress on January 23, 2009

Last but not least, YouTube. The last of the 5 things.

  1. Blogs
  2. LinkedIn
  3. Facebook
  4. Flickr/del.icio.us
  5. YouTube

Go to YouTube and search for blendtec. This video on YouTube has had millions and millions of views. Search for something to do with your own business. Could you do a video for YouTube to promote your business?

If you have completed the 5 things, you have probably come up with dozens of ways to promote your business online. These are certainly not the only social media sites that you could use. If you want to look further, you could go to twitter.com, myspace.com, etc. to see if there is anything there you could use. I chose these 5 things because they are doable for me. You could be involved in every social media site out there but you would have to spend a lot of time to keep up with it.

Wondering if social media works? Look at the last elections. Candidates at all levels were connected in more ways with voters that they have ever been before. That is a lesson to take to heart. I hope this exploration has been beneficial to you and your business. Feel free to email me and let me know.

5 things part 4

by blogmistress on January 22, 2009

If you have been completing the 5 things this week, you should be feeling pretty connected by now. Today, let’s look at Flickr.

  1. Blogs
  2. LinkedIn
  3. Facebook
  4. Flickr/del.icio.us
  5. YouTube

From the Wall Street Journal:

Wouldn’t it be great if you could actually find stuff on the Internet? Sure, Google is a wonderful tool for searching for some things — say the home page of a company, or how to make Battenberg cake. But more often than not, you’ll get way too many hits for what you’re looking for, and end up frustrated.

Last year a couple of free Internet services started doing something interesting, entirely independently of each other. Flickr (www.flickr.com) is a Web site for storing your photographs; del.icio.us (simply http://del.icio.us) lets you store bookmarks to your favorite Web pages. They share two features: Both let users add tags to what they are storing, and by default share that data with any other user.
So, say you upload a photo to Flickr , you might add a word or two to categorize it — say, scuba, or marzipan. The same applies if you add a Web page to your del.icio.us bookmarks. But because both of these tools are public, it also means that you can see what other pictures, in the case of Flickr , or Web page links in the case of del.icio.us, have the same tags. (28 January 2005)

Go to Flickr and Del.icio.us. Look around. Think of any ways that you could use these 2 sites to promote your business. Also, think of ways you could use photos to spice up your blog. Go to the creative commons in flickr to get photos that are not copyrighted. It is always good practice to attribute photo credit to the photographer. Put your own photos on flickr. Take photos of your business, business events, products, etc. You get the idea.

5 things part 3

by blogmistress on January 21, 2009

So far this week, we have explored bloggin and LinkedIn. Today, we are jumping in and looking at thing number 3 on our list – Facebook.

  1. Blogs
  2. LinkedIn
  3. Facebook
  4. Flickr
  5. YouTube
Facebook gives people the power to share and makes the world more open and connected.

Millions of people use Facebook everyday to keep up with friends, upload an unlimited number of photos, share links and videos, and learn more about the people they meet.

According to Google, Facebook was the number 3 most searched term globally in 2008. Could your business benefit from being a part of that?
Go to Facebook and set up and account. Facebook is a lot more casual than LinkedIn. This is the place where you can let people see the human side of you and your business. People like to do business with people they know. Let people get to know a little about you.
Like you did with LinkedIn, find at least 5 friends to link with (again, feel free to link with me). Look at some of the business pages. If you are ready for it, create your own business page with a link to your website and blog.
Look at Facebook groups. Join a few that have interests similar to your own. Can you think of ways that Facebook could benefit your business?

Blog/Social Media – 5 Things, Part 2

by blogmistress on January 20, 2009

This week, we are exploring 5 things.

  1. Blogs
  2. LinkedIn
  3. Facebook
  4. Flickr
  5. YouTube

Yesterday, we looked at blogs. Today, we are looking at LinkedIn.

  • LinkedIn has over 34 million members in over 200 countries and territories around the world.
  • A new member joins LinkedIn every second of every day, approximately half of our members are outside the U.S.
  • Executives from all Fortune 500 companies are LinkedIn members.

What is LinkedIn?

LinkedIn is an interconnected network of experienced professionals from around the world, representing 170 industries and 200 countries. You can find, be introduced to, and collaborate with qualified professionals that you need to work with to accomplish your goals.
Go to LinkedIn and set up a profile. Find 5 people you know to link to (feel free to link to me – Christi Wharton). Look at the groups. Are there any groups that could benefit you? View groups that your contacts have joined. Join groups with interests that are similar to your own. How could you use the LinkedIn network to help your business. Is there anyone on LinkedIn that could use your expertise? Is there anyone on LinkedIn that you can learn from?
