Keep Your Eye On The Goal

keep your eye on the goalSetting goals for your internet marketing is an important step towards success. If you don’t know where you are going it is hard to get anywhere. Sometimes, however, we meticulously plan and work and set goals, but then become distracted. Of course, it is very easy to get distracted. Even with our best laid plans, the world can fog our view of the finish line. The struggling economy can be a distraction, news of a world that is restless can be a distraction. We may have personal distractions as well. It can be a challenge to keep moving towards a goal and not give up.

I am reminded of the story of swimmer, Florence Chadwick. Chadwick was the first woman to swim the English Channel. She swam it both ways. She then wanted to be the first woman to swim the 26 miles between the California coast and Catalina Island. She set out to reach this goal in July of 1952. As Chadwick swam, a heavy fog set in. She had been swimming for 15 hours and was having difficulty seeing the small boats that were accompanying her. She began to doubt her ability. Her mother, who was in one of the boats encouraged her to continue. She swam for another hour in the thick fog, unable to see the coastline of Catalina Island. Finally, in exhaustion, she asked to be pulled from the water. It wasn’t until she was in the boat, she discovered that she was less than half a mile a way from her goal! At a news conference the next day she said, “All I could see was the fog.…I think if I could have seen the shore, I would have made it.”

We are the same way. When we can’t see our goal, we become distracted and sometimes even give up when it might have been just the next little bit of effort that would have gotten us to our goal. Chadwick didn’t let her failure stop her. Two months after her first attempt, she went back and completed the swim to Catalina. She said that as she swam, she kept a mental picture of the Catalina shoreline in her mind.

Think about your goals. What kind of distractions do you need to overcome. Keep your eye on your goal and keep moving towards it!
